Is Your Child Ready to See a Naturopath? What to Know Before you Book

As a parent, it’s only natural to want the best support for your child especially when it comes to their health. Naturopathy can offer a beautiful, holistic approach to wellness, but there are a few situations where it might not be the first step in your journey.

This blog isn’t about turning you away, it’s about setting you up for success.

Before booking a naturopathic appointment for your child, there are two common challenges that I see time and again. If either of these sounds familiar, addressing them first might make your experience with a naturopath far smoother (and less frustrating for everyone involved).

If mealtimes feel like a battlefield, or your child only eats five “safe” foods and refuses to try anything new, you’re not alone.

This kind of eating can be incredibly stressful for families. Sometimes, there are some really genuine
psychological issues around change. In these cases, a feeding therapist may be a better starting point than a naturopath.

Why?

Because dietary change is foundational in natural medicine. We believe that food is one of the main healers for our body.

And if you’re not quite ready to get rid of numbers, add colourful fruits and veggies and diversify the diet, then naturopathic advice might feel like something you can’t action yet.

I want your time and energy to be respected and that means starting where your child is at. Feeding therapists (often occupational therapists, speech therapists, or psychologists) who specialise in extreme fussy eating are incredible allies in helping children expand their comfort zones around food.

Once that foundation is in place, naturopathic care becomes much more actionable and far less stressful for everyone.

We are probably always going to recommend either herbs or some type of supplement that even though it might not taste bad to an adult, might taste not so great to a child. Many of the herbs and supplements we use in clinic do have a taste, even the mild ones. That’s because they’re therapeutic, and therapeutic supplements are, well, meant to do something.

If your child has a strong aversion to:

  • Flavours
  • Textures (especially gritty, chalky, or powdery)
  • Swallowing tablets or capsules

…then this may create a barrier to care.

Supplements aren’t always essential, but they are often a core part of naturopathic treatment, especially in the early stages when we’re working to correct deficiencies or rebalance systems.

What Can Help?

One idea I often suggest is to gently practice capsule swallowing at home. Start small – literally. A frozen blueberry, cut into tiny pieces, makes a wonderful tool. It’s soft, safe, and gives children a chance to learn the mechanics of swallowing without pressure. Over time, you can work up to slightly larger pieces or soft gel capsules (without any active ingredients).

It’s a simple strategy that builds confidence and gives us more treatment options when the time comes.

If you’re not sure whether your little one is ready for naturopathic care just yet, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to chat through where you’re at and point you in the right direction, even if that means recommending someone else first.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about who you see first it’s about what helps your child thrive in the long run and making sure the advice you receive in a naturopathic consultation feels empowering, not overwhelming.
